-Auto air cond.
-under floor heat, furnace ac.dc gas
-thermostatic controlled
-ceiling fans and exhause have louvered covers
-kitchen has 'fantastic' reversible fan
-lge bath c.w shower
-fan in bath
-2 doors to exterior
-full awning c.w curtain
-extra batteries
-2 grey water tanks
-2 gray-water tanks (1 x 74 gals US)

The darn thing is spotless and very well maintained. The older couple (one collects old age pension!...imagine that) live in Windsor and spend summers in Gimli. The trailer had spent about 8 months in Arizona (near Yuma) one year but has resided at Gimli ever since.
Well, we take possession on or about Friday. Wish us luck!

Garage sale, Vikings, regatta, *Yawn*

Hello from the Islendagadagurin Festival in Sunny Gimli.  Lots to see and do today.  We had a 'Multi-campsite' garage sale this AM at 9:00am.  We were up a bit early and headed over to the coffee shop for a little brekkie.  The place was full....what the hell are all these people doing up so early on a Saturday?   Anywho, we had the special and got over to the garage sale place (in front of the bowling alley) at 8:45 am.....plenty o'time.....no, everybody was there, set up and selling already.   We gave up at about 11:00am and headed off to the waterfront where there was live music, tons of little kiosks selling stuff like mmmmmmmmmmini-doughnuts and henna tattoos.   Later on we went over to the Viking Village where the 're-enactors' were doing their thing all dressed up as Vikings...warriors, women and such.   They even had some mock battles, they really get into it.  I have always liked the Vikings, I have their fridge and stove!   Seeing all the warriors kinda reminded me of the 'city bank' commercials.  There was a large regatta going on and all the different sailing classes were out there competing...sails all over.   They were also supposed to fire a full size trebuchet but while we were there at the scheduled time, there was nobody there.  Must a been a change in plans.   It is around 9pm and all is still and hardly any noise form the campground but I can faintly hear a band playing, probably on the dock which is about 3 kilometres away.
Well, we had a BBQ steak dinner and we are both showered and .......ready for a movie?  heehee.....well maybe movie afterwards.
I think I bought a new trailer....more later.
Peace.

Islandigadagurin, the media, the Fog of War

Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.

When we spoke to Margot on the phone yesterday not only was she excited about her new job at the Raincity Grill but she said that she was planning to take a course in 'media and communications' in Sept. and was looking forward to it. I am glad that things are going well for her and Joel too. Joel has his own business setting up and maintenance of aquariums for both business and private people. He still pulls a shift or two at Cardero's each week to keep his hand in. Glad they are BOTH doing well. Now if they could just hear from their Vancouver Island cousins..............

I got called into the Air Museum today because no one else showed up, one sick the others off on holidays. Good thing I was available to come in otherwise they would have been high and dry.

Well tomorrow we are heading back to the lake. Mom is coming over to dog sit for Fri. nite, Sat. and Sat. nite as we have a huge garage sale that we are participating in for the whole campsite on Saturday. Besides it's the ISLANDIGADAGURIN Festival this weekend and we would like to check that out and it is impossible to do with a doggie in tow (even a good doggie). It is supposed to be nice weather so we are looking forward to it.

They fogged around here again last night. That West Nile Virus wont be coming around here I tell you. The mozzies have all buggered off. This is the second round of fogging and gee, they were successful the first time, this time they are getting the REAL SLOW ones.

Well, better go, Oprah is on, something about pathalogical liars lacking in self-esteem? and, besides the lasagna is ready mmmmmmmm.

Peace.

poutine, shinny, nip and chips

Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.

It's 12:00pm and it's time to sqeeze in a blog before bed. There was an interesting article on TV about Canadian slang. Here are some of them and a few of my own:
-G'day,eh? (good day huh?)
-He'd talk the ears off a moose. (talk too much)
-I'll split some poutine on the chesterfield. (I'll split some food with you on the sofa)
-Keep this under your hat. (keep this secret safe)
-Let's go play some Shinny. (let's go play some pick-up hockey)
-there is a skiff of snow in the street (a light dusting of snow)
-chips and a nip please! (French fries and a hamburger)
-cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey (self explanatory)
-let's get a 2-4 and drink (let's get a case of 24 beer and have a party)
-where's my tuque, my head is cold (where is my wool hat)
-Well that is skookum (apparently this means swell on the wet coast)
-Loonie (dollar) twoonie (two dollars)
-a buck (dollar), a buck and a half (dollar fifty)
-two bits (25 cents) 4 bits (50 cents) 6 bits (75 cents)
-'the Peg' (Winnipeg, the most beautiful city on the Canadian prairies, eh)

Well that's enough for now ya HOSERS! Study Bob and Doug MacKenzie and get back to me EH.

Peace.

It's Sunday and we are at the lake again

The thermometer reads 35 +- deg c....now, that is approaching Oklahoma hot (or maybe Nebraska). There is a nice breeze coming in the windows, ahhhh. I understand that there is a heat wave going on in the south with temps over 100 degs f. Some 21 people have died of the heat in Arizona, mostly the poor and homeless.
Gary has gone camping too, he's out at Maryhill (?) the forces campsite not very far from Victoria They like it there, it's close enough that they can run into the
city to check the e-mail and update the blog. For us Gimli is an hour and a quarter drive. We are
here for a couple of days. It's nice to be here when most others have buggered off. We will go back Tuesday because (1) we have to watch 'Big Brother' Tues nite, and (2) pull a shift at the Museum
Weds morn, and (3) we have to watch 'Big Brother' on Thursday nite. There is a garage sale in Gimli next Saturday and Catherine is intent on brining a pile o' crap out here to sell. Good idea except I gotta sit with her to price the crap. No matter what price you put on there, these 'bargain hunters' want to pay less....."What 25 cents for a watch?? USED??....I only got a dime!....how about it?" Why I oughta.......
I understand from Mom that Jack is buying a house in Tishomingo. I hope he plans for an extra room as a guest room!
I talked to Gary the other day and he tells me that he is coming alone to Winnipeg for a visit in the fall, Sept.? Oct.? Not sure. I am looking forward to it. Seems he was here last year at the same time (Oct.) and helped me close the trailer for the winter....gotta find that drain for the hot water tank! It would be nice if Jack could be out at the same time. How about it Jackaroo?
Well, it looks as though the next couple of days will be sunny and around 22 - 23 deg c (+-75 deg f) that will be nice. AS LONG AS THERE IS NO MORE RAIN!
Peace, Remember the ONE Campaign www.one.com .

The Raging Grannies are angry that the U.S. is building 14 permanent bases in Iraq. We are angry that U.S. policies are driven by fear-mongering and growing losses of First Amendment Rights. We abhor the use of torture by U.S. forces against detainees.
The Raging Grannies firmly believe that:
-The Iraq invasion was planned before 9-11 as documented by the Downing Street Memos;
-The Iraq war has nothing to do with Al Queda (Saddam Hussein was not a part it);
-The Iraq war has nothing to do with Weapons of Mass Destruction;
-The Iraq war has everything to do with U.S. controlling access to Middle Eastern Oil; and that
-The Iraq war is an illegal, immoral war that has everything to do with U.S. world domination.
We insist that Recruiters tell the truth to our grandchildren who come to serve their country.

A prairie dog is a large, burrowing, ground squirrel. An average adult weighs about two pounds. Prairie dogs are active only during daylight hours and spend a lot of time feeding and socializing. (Sounds like just about any morning at Tim Horton's!) Prairie dogs build their homes underground in tunnels that extend downward from 3-10 feet and then horizontally for another 10-15 feet.

Gay Penguins have a cow!

ME fail English? ...that's unpossible.

Kind of a grey day today...overcast, but not raining..yet.
We went to Al and Janine's place for dinner on Tuesday night. I picked up a bottle of "The little Penguin" shiraz from Australia for the dinner. It was very good. It was recommended by the "Wine Spectator" on-line. They rated it about a 90 (on a scale of 100) and at $11 it was a great buy. Just goes to show you that a wine does not have to be expensive to be good.
I worked over at the museum on Wednesday morning and it was pretty quiet...maybe thirty or so people, mostly Americans.
I see the border is finally open to Canadian cattle. The Montana group R-calf has lost its protectionist battle to ban Canadian cattle form crossing the border. They were quite happily enjoying the high prices their cattle were getting while the ban was on. Since 'mad-cow' has been found in American cattle, they could not keep up the pretense of banning Canadian cattle for that reason. Its been a two year slog for Canadian beef producers and they have lost billions....so woohoo for them!

Another bit of good news, woo-hoo.... Tulsa zoo had backed off placing a 'creationist view of the origin of life' on their zoo grounds, after a storm of protest from all over the country. A zoo is not a place for this type of thing. Keep religion out of zoos......sheesh, you'd think that would be a given.

Anyhow, Canada has OFFICIALLY made same-sex marriage legal. Here is a case of a minority winning rights...thats what a democracy does, it protects the rights of minorities. However, the majority of Canadians supported the rights of gays to marry. Just the Conservatives (Americans read Democrats here), and the religious right who claim marriage is a religious institution, did not agree. The state issues marriage licences, not the church....Anyhow, people that get married in a civil ceremony are just as married as those that are married in a church. All marriages are documented in a government facility...civil or not. This makes legalized marriage a matter for the government not the church. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a church marriage if that is what is wanted, all that pomp and traditions and stuff. But a marriage isn't legal until it is recognized by the government. That really makes all marriages civil and religious ceremonies are extraneous. Off on a tangent there....don't get me started.

Catherine got a letter published in the Winnipeg Free Press tdoay, its all about religion in schools. You can read the article here. Yes, we have a 'bible belt' here in southern Manitoba, its mostly mennonites who emigrated here from Europe (mostly Germany), who are religious and like to impose their values (don't have sex standing up because it might be construed as dancing!) on all students by having daily bible readings, paryers, etc. Oh, the 'others' who do not want to participate in the religious exercises are invited to leave the classroom and go elsewhere in the school, but that makes them ostracized and open to bullying. How can you expect young kids to deal with that? And these people came to Canada to avoid being ostracized in the old country......

Better go for now ....peace everyone. And remember, these are only MY opinions. Keep an open mind.

ME fail English? ...that's unpossible.

I see Gary and Carol are back from their trip to the Lavender Festival in Sequim, WA.
Visit seven beautiful Farms on Tour in the stunning Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Growers share their techniques for cultivating, drying and using lavender, and visitors experience the perfume and beauty of this captivating herb. See dozens of varieties with colors and scents from sweet whites to crisp purples, while enjoying the sunshine, mountain views, scented breezes and open spaces of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

We got a new source for weather in sunny St. Vital.....a self described 'weather weenie'. He is one of six around the city that update their sites every 10 minute with the local weather, etc. NOW that's exciting! The weather service can update you only after about six hours...typical government. Well, then I guess you can stick you head out the window and ascertain if it is hot, cold, wet or dry pretty quick too! haha During the recent storm on the weekend, the Maples (north end) got 27 mms while the St. Vital area (south end) got 90-110 mms. So there is pockets of heavier rain, as with any storm....hail too.....well its interesting to me.
I may get me one of these weather stations and then I can be a weather weenie too......!

We are going over to Al and Janine's place for dinner. Paul and Pat will be there and Al's daughter René along with her new boyfriend Sui (?)...he's a doctor and he is from the Vancouver area but is currently working in Winnipeg.

Well, better go and get a bottle of vino for tonight. Perhaps a bottle of:
CHÉREAU-CARRÉ Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Château de la Chesnaie 2004 (87 points)
Bright and crunchy, with lime, floral and chalk notes. Crisp, refreshing finish.

Later, peace.

ME fail English? ...that's unpossible.

We were out at the lake when the storm hit Winnipeg (see entry below). We had no clue as to what had taken place in the city. Out at Gimli on the lake we had rain in the range of 40 - 50 mms but no damage by the wind. Meanwhile over Saturday night in Winnipeg there was widespread damage, downed power lines, uprooted trees, etc. The winds were in the 100 to 110 KM/hr range, and in the St. Vital (southeast Wpg) area 90 - 100 mms of rain fell. Most damage was from the wind and that occured mostly in the Maples, St. James and West and East St. Paul, and St. Boniface. Some streets were made immpassable because of felled trees and power poles. A sort of mini hurricane. There was not as much as a turned over patio table at our place. Some houses had storm drain backups but our area was fine. There is a couple of large retention ponds up on Bishop Grandin and that helps store the excess water during a storm such as this. In the areas where basements flooded there was electrical outages and the citys pumps shut down.

Well, this summer has been interspersed with blazing heat and stunning thunderstorms. Is the world coming to an end?....I'll keep you posted.
Peace

CBC news on-line July 18, 2005

"People in Winnipeg are still facing power outages and impassable streets after two thunderstorms lashed the city over the weekend with high winds, heavy rain and hail.
The back-to-back storms had windspeeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour and dumped as much as 90 millimetres of rain on city Saturday night and Sunday morning. Rob Paola, a meteorologist for Environment Canada, said the south end of the city was hardest hit, with some areas receiving 90 millimetres of rain in roughly an hour.
City officials have said the storms were the worst to hit the city in the past 100 years.
Motorists faced a number of travel hazards on Sunday, including flooded underpasses, roads strewn with trees and branches, and traffic lights that didn't function. The problems persisted into Monday in some areas. Police reminded motorists that in situations where traffic lights are not working, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.
Hydro crews were scrambling to restore power to homes and businesses across the capital region and as far north as the Lake Winnipeg beaches after the storms downed power poles. "

Honey-pots, dragons, Sandpipers and spectacles.

Here we are at the lake.  I'm sipping coffee just after making a trip with the 'Honey pot'.  Catherine is playing Numero and reading, but not at the same time.  The temp is around 23 c and cloudy.  It poured rain last night and at one time the thunder woke me up...it actually shook the trailer and it felt like the damn thing hit somewhere very near.   So, kind of a restless sleep last night.  There seems to be a pattern emerging, we get a hot spell and that sucks up the moisture and then it rains.....then there is a hot spell, etc.  AND, we did the Sunday morning NYT X-word....difficult but not over whelming!

Boy, is there ever a lot of dragonflies around.  Its good because they eat mosquitoes, but I have never seen so many.  Today on the beach the dragonflies were hovering up above like some kind of helicopter air force......and NO mozzies!

It seems that there is this nice trailer for sale, privately.  A 28 foot 'sandpiper' (Forest River mfg.??) with a big pullout (breakfast nook and sofa), queen size bed, nice full bathroom, two TV's.  It's two years old and has been kept well.   We are giving it serious thought, the only drawback is how to pay for it. HAha. Well, its nice to dream.

We probably will be out here for a couple of more days, we have a couple of things to do in town, not the least of which is take Mom to, let's see what is it now?....the optometrist for new glasses.  I am not sure but I think that she has put the wig idea on the back burner for now.

Speaking of burners.....I got some steaks for supper, so I had better go fire up the 'grill-to-go'.

Honey-pots, dragons, Sandpipers and spectacles.

ME fail English? ...that's unpossible.

It was a beautiful day today, sunny and warm,so we went to the Tutankamon exhibit at The Forks! Very interesting display. The very sarcophagus of King Tut himself, gold leafed and encrusted in
jewels with cartouches all over the place.

I am now back at home doing some research on the net about Grandfather Percival Ousey and Grandfather Joseph Hogue. I found that they both served in the 16th Battalion during WWI. Percival was shot in the arm and the leg and captured by the Germans on Oct. 8th, 1916 at the battle of the Somme (the first battle where tanks were used). Joseph Hogue left for Europe a little after Percival and he fought on the front lines in France and Belgium from March 5, 1917 to around April 27, 1918. He was then discharged for an "impaired function of the heartcaused by over exertion and strain of duty" while fighting at Vimy Ridge on or about April 30th, 1917. He probably went
on to fight in Passchendale. The cause of his heart trouble could have been caused by a gas such as phosgene, which was commonly used by
the Germans at Vimy Ridge at that time. It could not have affected him later in life becasue I always remember him as a big , strong man and besides he lived to be 93! Anyways, imagine that BOTH Grampas from Winnipeg serving in the same battalion in the same war. It was kind of sad about Percival because he was only shipped to the front lines a few days before he was shot and captured and then spent the next two years in a POW camp in Germany. I guess that there were many just like him because the glorious Brit commanders blamed, what seemed to them to be a runaway victory, the loss partly on the 'untrained troops being sent straight to the front!'......dozy buggers! And you know, neither one of them got any medals....but at least they did not die.

More later, PEACE.

'20s era Fokker Universal found

A museum's long search for a bush plane that crashed in northern Manitoba 73 years ago has finally met with success.
The Western Canada Aviation Museum has been searching for the plane known as "the Ghost of Charron Lake" for three decades.
The plane is a Fokker Universal, a model widely used for cargo transport in the 1920s. The plane in Charron Lake is thought to be the only one of its kind still in one piece.

ME fail English? ...that's unpossible.

Well, first it was unprecidented rainfalls. And now, all the water left standing in the fields has caused a huge outbreak of mosquitoes. They have been watching for the mosquitoes that carry the west nile virus and they are now turning up in the traps. The province has ordered fogging the city with malathion. But really the mosquitoes have not been a problem here in St. Vital until just the last week or so.
Now I hope that they get the little buggers real good. There wasnèt many mossies last year at all but in 2003 they were bad, then they fogged and poof they were all gone.....really POOF!

Anywho, I got a letter this week that informed us the the REH-FIT centre's TEMPORARY facility, the Court Sports (next door) has been closed due to flood damage. When we came back fro our cruise, we tried the Court Sports facility but found it wanting....veeeeery wanting, so we put our membership on hold for three months. That cost us about $100.00 to do but they said "sorry, the court Sports facility is a good one and that they were satified that people would should be happy to work out there". The place was musty, showers did not work, the A/C did not work and the place was in a general state of well, uncleanliness. So now they are doing what they should have done LOOONNGG before this...they are allowing people to put their memberships on hold until the new facility is open AT NO CHARGE. We will be getting a refund. We will continue to pay our memberships but the extra 3 or 4 months will be tacked on to the end of our 'yearly commitment'.

Yesterday, Catherine decided that we should pop over to the local Wally World and do a bit of shopping....and Oh yes, we could pop into the Old Navy store that just opened up at the St. Vital shopping centre. Anyhow, as I was pulling out of my parking spot at Wally World a woman driving an older chevrolet was passing very close behind me.....and I hit her car. It was amazing, I couldn't so that again if I tried. I still had the trailer hitch on my car and as I pulled out I hit her at the front tire....right on the hubcap. Boink! There was virtually no damage and after I assertained that she was not shaken up we looked at the cars and decided that since there was no damage we needn't bother exchanging info. Exciting. (I lead a pretty uneventful life!)

MMMMM lunch time, a blogna sandwich? Fabulous, DAHLING! My life is getting more exciting already! Later, PEACE.

Me fail English???? That's unpossible.

This is a letter posted to the Humanist 'list-serve' by a fellow Humanist named Ernie Schreiber:

There was an article in Wednesday's (July 13th) Ottawa Citizen on the front
page with the header: "Pope decries Potter books 'subtle seductions" and
the sub-header: "Then-cardinal feared tales would turn children from
faith." In the article Ratzinger is quoted as condemning "...the Harry
Potter books as 'subtle seductions' capable of profoundly corrupting young
Christians and turning them from their faith."

What I find extremely ironic here is the following comment by Ratzinger,
and I quote: "...these are subtle, barely perceptible seductions, and
precisely because of that they have a profound effect and can corrupt the
Christian faith in souls even before it (faith) is able to properly
grow." This is what Ratzinger wrote in a letter, dated March 7, 2003, to
Gabriele Kuby, a German bestselling religious author, who had sent him a
copy of the first book of the series for comment.

Why is it ironic? Ratzinger practically admits that the church instills
church doctrine and Biblical fairy tales in the minds of young children as
"the absolute truth" before they have the capacity to reasons or think
critically, and he is worried that the Harry Potter stories (which are also
fairy tales but perhaps easier to understand and to like than stories in
the Bible) will interfere with the brainwashing process the church is
engaged in.

Sweltering, sultry, hot, banana cream blizzards

Wednesday. I picked up a shift at the museum today. Boy, is it sweltering outside......SULTRY. It is something like 34 deg c and high humidity. I stopped off at Mom's place to see if she wanted to come over to our house for a few days, but she is managing to stay cool at her place with her window air conditioner. She says that it is cool in the cafeteria where they play cards too, as they have many fans in there. Besides she could not come because she had just had the girl in to give her a bath and her hair was a mess. Well, she'll be alright. I was a bit worried though because she had some minor chest pains last night that went away on their own after while. She says she is right as rain now.

On the way home Catherine and I stopped at Dairy Queen and of course I had a score blizzard. Hey, Gary, did you know that they now have a BANANA CREAM BLIZZARD? MMMMMMMMMM.

Too bloody hot to go out to the lake, we will wait a couple of days.
Well better go....time for a nap....later..... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Kaboom you ass-puckering sapsucker!

Monday.   Last night we had the mother of all storms.  Well, not scads of rain but thunder and lightening that you would not believe.  The kind of lightening that lights up the whole, big prairie sky and the kind of thunder that makes your ass pucker.   The thunder cracks feel as if they are going right through you, your body shakes.   The lightening happens and then you wait........KABOOM, RUMBLE, RUMBLE, KABOOM! ?  We developed a leak at the front of the trailer and a leak at the TV antennae control.  These will have to be caulked.   I see some trees fell during the storm and the camp owner is going around and cutting them up.  Today it is just cool (22 deg c) and overcast....a nice day to sit and read, snuggle and eat some Old Dutch BBQ chips, drink coffee, or do some crosswords.

Yesterday we had a yellow-bellied sapsucker come and rat-a-tat-tat on our metal utensil holder which is strung between two trees.   I gather that it is a territorial/mating thing that causes this and he  did this several times throughout the day.

Anyhow, got to go.   peace.

Kaboom you ass-puckering sapsucker!

Sunday at the lake.   Woke up this a.m. to the sounds of a loudspeaker announcing a 'classic car rally'.  Right down Centre Street, which as you can imagine is right through the centre of town.   Cars line up on either side of the street.  There was lots of chevies (chevvies?,Chevys?), mostly '56 & '57, a couple of Bricklins (Deloreans), GTO's, Chevelles, Cobras, an old '41 Mercury (didn't Gary have one of those?), a couple of MG's including a '37 MG Roadster.  I met a friend of mine there, he had his '57 Chevy there and it was real nice...... cherry red.  Ray B., whom I knew from the Magellan (Bristol) Aerospace (Rockets &Space plant),  retired the year after I did.  He was stressed out too, and had actually taken a stress leave before he decided that the job was really getting to him. I never did take stress leave, I decided to be stoic about it and have a heart attack instead.  So to save his own life (for that is what it comes down to) he retired early.

We will stay at the lake until tomorrow, unless it starts raining cats and dogs, in which case we will bugger off because we don't need another dog and cats are too shifty and you don't know where they have been.  It's so hot out now that the dog is finding it hard to find a cool place, and she is panting away.  She really prefers the air-conditioned car and frankly so do I, but we have run out of places to drive to.  Yesterday we drove up old #9 north, we saw Camp Morton, River bend Trailer park and ended up in Hnasau (bless you!).  We were going to drive to Riverton but the road turned to gravel and that put an end to that.  Today we also drove out to the Gimli Airport.  They have a gliding club and a skydiving club and the air cadets still go there for camp.  The runways are still active.  I flew into Gimli once but I didn't hang around, I just landed and took off again.  The sports car club has car racing out there now.  Gimli is the airport where the 'Gimli Glider' landed.  A 727 jet, in around 1980 when they were converting to metric,  ran out of fuel over Thunder Bay and glided all the way to Gimli where he landed (glided to) safely.   All he did was collapse the front landing gear.   As I recall, the pilot got an award from the US but Air Canada suspended him, saying that as 'pilot in command' he was responsible.  (He signed off on the wrong amount of fuel, due to a mix-up in converting to metric)

Jack has signed up for 'Skype'.   I have added him to my contacts list, but haven't had the chance to call him yet.   I wish Margot would download Skype then, we could talk to her computer to computer.  Ain't computers wonderful!......er software too, I guess.   I never tried 'Vonage' and as far as VOIP goes I think Skype is comparable and its free too.

Well, better go for now. See you on the web..........peace.

If this is Saturday it must be Gimli

We are at the lake.  Just finished watching "Spanglish" with Adam Sandler,  Tia Leoni, Paz Vega, and Cloris Leachman.  Its truly one of the better movies I have seen in a long while.  I like it when Adam Sandler really acts.  I have only seen it once before in "The Wedding Singer".   Just last week we saw "The Woodsman" with Kevin Bacon.  Kevin deserves an Oscar for that performance....outstanding.

Today was hot, hot.  It was 34 deg C and the humidity was high.  It made it very hard to breathe.   The beach was packed and it seems like everyone was in the  water.   I kept thinking about the nice comfortable house with air conditioning in the city but it is nice out here in the nature.   The leaves are rustling and the sound of distant thunder is like Shock and Awe.   How come you never count the seconds between seeing lightening and hearing thunder in the city but you ALWAYS count in the country?   Is it because you feel so close to Mother Nature and it makes you vulnerable?  No relief for tomorrow as it will again be hot and near 30.  Maybe tomorrow I'll go for a swim at the beach....kinda scary because the last time I went in the water, I couldn't get back out, everytime I tried to get out these Greenpeace types would run over and pull me back into the water.

The dog has given up on us and has gone to bed (on a quilt by the TV).   Well, its midnight and I guess she has the right idea, so nitey, nite!

Bloody teeth...Oh brother, have a banana!

We just got back from downtown. It has been a week of blood tests for both Catherine and I. I had the same bood test three times in a row. The lab had erred the first time and got a reading of 2000 on an enzyme that should have been in the 150 range.....egad sir, I should have been sorry twisted mass on the edge of death. It took them two more tries but they finally got an accurate reading of 170. I'm ALIVE, I'm ALIVE. As far as Catherine is concerned they got a high potassium reading and her Doctor wanted a second test to confirm. Its not serious but you don't want high potassium levels. As she was eating a banana today, I told her that she should cut back on the bananas and she gestured with the banana in a very rude way! It certainly had no appeel to me.

We took Mother to see the denturist yesterday. The Dr. wanted an impression from her. I said, "So what do you think Doc?"....."She seems really nice, don't you agree?".......he agreed. See his website HERE . New teeth would cost her around $1200.00. Gary seems to think that the teeth would be made from gold, but no, they will be made from plastic. Fitting, because they will be paid for with plastic. And now she wants new glasses...... Gee, new teeth, a pace-maker, new glasses and with her dual hearing aids, this 87 year old woman will be bionic! Is she thinking of gettin herself a new Beau? No, wellllll, .....no. No time for that between cribbage and 31.

Last night was the start of the sixth "Big Brother", and it looks like it will be a smashing show. Lots more young, 'hard-bodies' this time. I think the oldest is around 33. I always like to root for the old ones, I don't know why. The new Big Brother house is a much bigger two story house, with secret doors, panels and all. It should be good.

The 'Folk Festival' is on this weekend at Bird's Hill Park. EmmyLou harris, Ricky Scaggs, Daniel lanois, local groups Nathan and the Weatherthans, and FEIST and others will be there. See their WEBPAGE

Well better go, looks like we'll be heading out to the lake again tomorrow. Check it out! GIMLI

Raincity Grill was once voted as 'Best Restaurant in Vancouver' by the New York Times. It looks absolutely scrumptious! Great wine list too.

This is one of two giant bronze buffalo that decorate the main staircase at the Legislature. It weighs two tonnes (or 5000 lbs) and in order to place them inside the building they had to cut ice from the river and slide each one through the foyer on top of that ice in order not to damage the marble floor. Apart from the marble the building is completely made of Tyndall stone (mined just north-east of Winnipeg). Canada's Parliament building are made from Tyndall stone too. Posted by Picasa

Bold Bears and Bison on Broadway

Today its kinda dull and cool, so we did the 'touristy' things. We visited the Manitoba Legislature and took in a bit of a tour. ABOVE find a pic of one of the two 5000 lb bronze buffaloes (bison) that adorn the grand staircase. We also took in the "Bears on Broadway"......see the pics below.

I got some time this week so I checked in at the Museum and I will pull a shift on Wednesday AM. They have some tours going through but it is mostly day-care kiddies, so I think I'll leave that to the babysitters.

Anyhow, better check my e-mail. too-dell-oo, ta-ra, and auf wiedersehen for now.

Pink Floyd goes Kapow on Canada Day

Here we are at the lake.   We got here Friday morning.   Thursday we called the RV Park and they told us it was flooded and to not come out because they were pumping the water out.  All was well by Friday though and we found the trailer high and dry.  The ground is still soggy but I can live with that.

There were Canada Day celebrations going on in Gimli Friday including a free pickerel feast, but unfortunately we just missed it.  There were fireworks and the boats in the harbour were decked out in Canada flags, etc.

Friday night the neighbours decided to entertain some friends until 2 am.  They had a guitar and were having a gay ole sing song.  You haven't lived until you hear Pick Floyd's 'Another Brick In the Wall' at 2 am when you are trying to sleep.  Anyhow, today we complained and so did others, so they are now swearing that it was unintentional and that they will NEVER do that again.   We'll see.  I must say (and Catherine agrees with me) that I showed much restraint by not getting up and telling them to be quiet (in the politest terms possible, of course).    Oh, I thought of it....something like, "Hey you insufferable Knobheads, who wants to hear Pink Floyd at 2 in the morning???  Don't you know any Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin????"  And perhaps I might have gone straight over there, naked except for my new silk-like red boxer shorts with the golden dragons on them!....If anything, that would have scared the shit out of them!  Anyhow, it sure is quiet tonight....not a peep.

Its back to the city tomorrow because Catherine has a doctor's appointment early Monday morning and then I have to get a chest x-ray done (as part of my annual physical).   Catherine wants us both to have haircuts and she is suggesting that I go to her hair stylist.  Not sure about that.  We probably wont get back out to the lake until Friday because Mom has an appointment with the optometrist on Thursday and we have agreed to take her there.  She thinks that she needs new glasses.

I heard on the radio that there was so much rain on Tuesday and Wednesday that there were septic tanks bursting out from the ground.  Apparently the ground was so soggy and air gets trapped in the tanks and kapow!   And NO, they did not explode!   Our basement was dry but they say that hundreds of others had basement flooding.  The floodway is wide open and there is some sandbagging going on but just in those areas that are perennially prone to flooding.

Later, all.

Bob Herbert in his op-ed piece in the NYT paper has got it right. Incompetency at the very top of the US Administration and a quagmire in Iraq.
