Hello Friday.
Just got in the door with Mother in tow. They did some blood work at the hospital at 10:00 AM this morning and the results never came back until around 2:00 PM. They had to make sure she was clear for take-off. Anyhow, she is here now and settling in. She is in good spirits and severalof the nurses on the different shifts said that they would miss her when she goes .....the nurse that was on today said that Mom was a really nice lady. We had bags of stuff to bring back. She needed a separate bag just for condiments!.....sugar-twin, salt, pepper, hand lotion (2 bottles), cookies, etc. We did not take Gary's flowers to the hospital yesterday because we would have had to bring them back today. With three bouquets, the guest room is bursting with flowers and they brighten up the room and smell so good, too.
Well, better go eat before the little gremlins get here!.............hope there is some chocolates left.......damn dog probably ate some, huh?
'till tomorrow, then

Well, here we are Thursday. We just got back from the hospital. Mom is fine. she says that her heart seems to be beating so fast....well I guess so, before this it was frequently below 40...on Monday morning they took her pulse and it was 32...any slower and she would be working for the government! We received the flowers from Gary and the kids, two nice arrangements! Mother wanted me to tell you that she thinks they are very nice and she thanks all very much. She will be able to tell you herself, later. She will be released tomorrow, sometime...not sure when, but I guess they will call. Seems like Catherine and I have put our life on hold for a week or so. Anyhow, Mother will be coming to stay with us for a few days. But remember that if you phone her that she can't hear to good on my phone. Her phone has an amplifier on it and when you use it it can be heard accross the street! She has a new heariing aid but can't use it on the phone. I asked what kind it was and she said "Oh, about two o'clock!"......
Tonight we are going to the Reh-fit centre to attend a member appreciaiton night. They give out gifts and the size of the gift depends on the number of years that you have been a member. Last year, for 5 years as a member, I got a water bottle...WooHoo! Ah well, there is entertainment and tables are set up for members to display and sell their hobby-type goods. Maybe next year I can sell some stained glass stuff????!!!!
We went to Safeway today and cashed in on 350(+) airmiles...every so often they have a promotion on and if you spend $200,00 you can get 250 air miles (I did that with a couple of prescriptions!) and for $100.00 you can get 100 air miles ( Catherine did that in groceries). We have to build up our airmiles again since we used a bunch on Margot and Joel's trip here.
What do you get when you divide the area of a pumpkin by its radius ??????

Just got back from Victoria hospital. Mom had the operation and all is well. However, she will have to stay in the hospital for a couple of more days to be on the safe side. After the hospital, she will be coming to stay with us for a few more days, until she feels well enough to face the crowd at the Manor.
Anyhow....ALL IS WELL...she can now officially be called a Bionic Woman!
I' tired.

Just returned from the Victoria hospital. I went there at approx. 3:00 PM and she was not back from St. Boniface Hospital yet. Her operation was set for 10:30 AM and they said that she would go there and be back in couple of hours......that was not the case. Catherine and I will drop in after our workout this evening and I will update my blog again then. I am assured that everything went well. Later.

Today is overcast and cool at about 5 deg c.
I spoke with Gary this morning from Virginia (whose motto is "Sic Semper Tyrannis"or "Don't screw with me or I'll sic a dinosaur on your ass!"). They are having fun looking through caves and such. I can't believe that they passed up going to Washington. I would love to see the Smithsonian Museum.
I went to Mother's apartment today and fed the fish, turned off her humidifier, picked up her mail. I also told Elizabeth and Johanne (the homemaker), and the office about the situation. I picked up some fruit and a copy of "People" and "The National Enquirer" for her. When I got to the hospital, I found out that the appointment for her pace-maker implant will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday. She is still in very good spirits and is looking forward to the time when she can get out of there.
Looks like the flu hit early this year. It is almost an epidemic in Edmonton and it has hit here as well. In Quebec they are calling it a possible pandemic...but then they were always ones to exagerate. However, it would be smart to get a flu shot.
anyhow, more tomorrow....so

This AM we woke up to 10 cm of wet snow. Too early, go away until Chrismas.
After our workout, Catherine and I went to see Mom at the hospital. She is still in observation. There are no available beds in the hospital because of a localized flu outbreak. She is still quite cheerful in spite of the situation. I think that she is getting better care in observation than she would be getting on any of the floors anyway. It may be a bit noisy but when she takes out her hearing aids, she can't hear a damn thing anyway. She will not be getting her pacemaker until Wednesday, for whatever reason, I just don't know. As always, I will be patient until Wednesday but I may kick up some dust if it doesn't happen then. She has books to read, puzzles to do, flowers to look at (from Margot & Joel), a little bear to hug and keep her company (from us), so she is content to be there for a few more days. Tomorrow, I promised to look in on her fish "Oscar" and see if he is still alive. The provincial 'Homecare' people called me to see if she will require any additional help upon her release, and I suggested that they call the hospital and assess the situation with them. Anyhow, like I say, she can come and spend a few days recouperating with us, if she wants to. She is not so good that I can't take her at cribbage the odd game or two.

Today started with a blanket of snow on the ground, what a lovely sight. It is pretty well all gone now. It is only 5:00 PM but it is getting dark already, because of the time change.
Margot and Joel have left and, in fact, we just got a call from Margot saying that they arrived safe and sound back in Vancouver. It was a great visit and the 10 days just went by in a flash. We miss them already! Suzie misses them too!
Mother is still in Victoria hospital in observation. She is still in very good spirits and has managed to keep her sense of humour, kidding the staff and all. When we went today, Shirley Hogue was there for a visit. According to the nurses, she will be going to St. Boniface tomorrow to get her pace-maker. She will return back to Victoria hospital and the observation unit after the procedure. She will spend another night at Victoria hospital and, if all goes well, she will be paroled....er, released Tuesday. We have asked her if she wants to some to stay at our house for a few days after she gets out, but of course it is up to her. She is missing her crones at the manor. Apparently the pace-maker is a variable speed one.....if she has a mind to she can turn it up to hi and do a good impression of Michael Flately in 'Lord of The Dance'.....just kidding. Mother did say to the nurse that perhaps a pace-maker would give her longevity....you know, maybe she will live to 100. She is pretty 'with it' for a gal of 85 and this will indeed make her quality of life much better, so who knows?
Here is a halloween joke: "A Skeleton goes into a bar and says to the bartender, give me three beers and a mop."

Whew...it's been a busy week.
First off...Mother: I took her to the Victoria Hospital Friday afternoon about 12:30pm. She got a call from her Doctor in the morning and the Doctor told her that she chould go into the hospital as her pulse was quite low ( below 40 beats/min.). This was uncovered at the Doctor's office on Thursday, when Mother went and had a battery of tests done. When we got to emergency at Victoria, her pulse was weak. There were three doctors there who discussed the case at length and they decided, based on current indications and indications from the last time she was there in Feb. 2002, that a pace-maker for her would be appropriate. The final decision was made by a cardiologist when he saw her Friday night. When I saw her again Friday night, she was still in emergency but today ( Sat.) she has been moved to "Observation". I spoke to her nurse and she told me that there was a real good chance that mother would be kept there until the pace-maker could be installed, which is to happen within the week. The only hitch is that the procedure will have to be done at the St. Boniface hospital. But if she is released from Victoria hospital before the pace-maker is installed then we shall have her come and stay at our motel...er ..house. The procedure is a very simple one involving a pace-maker the size of 2 coins installed just under the skin of her chest. The operation may take approx. 20 minutes. Mother feels better now, knowing that something will be done. She remains in good spirits and her condition is stable, but they are taking her off her meds. (like coumadin) until she has the operation, so that is why they are hesitant to let her go home. Like I said, she is in good spirits, so she requests that no one should worry about her. Should anything develop, I will be in touch, until then sit tight and think of her. If you want to, for any reason at all, you can call me.
Apart from that...
Friday night, Catherine and I took Margot and Joel out to dinner to celebrate their second anniversary. We ate lots of Italian and drank some Chilean plonk and finished with Tiri-misu and a good time was had by all. Joel bought Margot an nice diamond necklace.
The rest of Friday and Today was taken up with the situation with Mother.
We are having a nice barbecue tonight and we will take in a nice breakfast at a restaurant tomorrow before Margot and Joel have to return to Vancouver on a 1:45 pm flight. We have had a wonderful visit and it was made especially better with Jack being here too that we shall be very sad once they leave.
Life is what happens to you while you are making plans...........

Here it is Thursday.....cool, around 10 deg c.
Yesterday, I went to the Air Museum and Margot, Joel and Catherine went to Nikkos for lunch and then shopping at the St. Vital Mall. In the evening we rented a movie called "Down
With Men" starring Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor and David Hyde-Pierce. It was a send-up of the old Doris Day, Rock Hudson & Tony Randall movies of the early 60's. Good movie....the stars make it.
Today we are going to take Margot & Joel to the Aviaiton Museum for a tour.

It was a beautiful and sunny day today.
This morning I finally had to change the battery in my corolla. You'd think that they would last more than twelve years! $65.00.......better last another twelve years!
This afternoon we all went for a walk over to the park and fed the ducks and geese. More geese every year. In some neighbourhoods in Winnipeg, where they have built large retention ponds, there is a real goose problem. Thousands of geese and goose poop all over the place....well, build it and they will come.
Tonight, Catherine got word that her Dad had a mild stroke. He is in the hospital and they say that he may not be able to go back home again. In other words, he will be going to an old folks home from the hospital. Luckily, Bob has moved in with him and will take care of the house and his finances to be sure.
Margot and Joel have gone out to the movies. We would have gone too, but Catherine was not in the mood for "Kill Bill".
Well, tomorrow is another day........

Well, its Monday afternoon and we just got back from the airport. Jack should be getting on the plane about now. We went to lunch at the Polo Park Pancake House before we dropped him off. He had said goddbye to Mom on Sunday night but gave her a call from the restaurant to say goodbye again. It was a nice visit. Tonight we are going to the Reh-fit centre and then Margot is making a huge shrimp dinner.
The weather is a bit windy but sunny, and around 15 deg. c.
Did I understand Gary to say that he is having dinner at Cornell University with Carl Sagan?
And Sagan has been dead for about 10 years?????....has he got connections or what?
Tomorrow is like, another day man...........

Here it is Monday and I haven't blogged since Friday! Holy moly. Osama bin busy!
On Friday night, we all went out to Oceana restaurant to celebrate Mom's birhday. We all came back to our place for Jeannies cake. Jack and I chipped in and got her a set of earrings....beauuutiful. And Margot and Joel bought her a nice brooch. Mom had a good time., as we all did.
As I said Jack arrived Tues and Margot and Joel arrived Thurs. And we have been busy since. On Saturday Catherine and I took Margot and Joel to see a play at MTC. The play was called "Cookin' at the Cookery", a biography of a blues singer named Alberta Hunter. It was great and at the end of the play they got a huge standing ovation. While we were at the play, Jack had a good visit with Mother. After the play, everyone came back to our place for pizza. And then of course, we played Trivial Pursuit. Jack, Margot and I were playing long after everone was gone. The battery on the Corolla gave out on Jack when he was at Mom's place.....you'd think that a battery would last longer than 12 years..... Oh well, its the original battery, so I can't complain.
Sunday, Catherine made a huge turkey dinner. Mom was here and we invited Kevin and Kim, but only Kevin could make it. We had a wonderful meal. Also on Sunday, Joel spent a busy day raking and trimming and raking and replanting...and raking. He sure gets satisfaction out of hard work like that and I am appreciative of the help around the house....because like, I'm not that enthusiastic about yard-work. After dinner, we watched a movie and Jack and I copied some of each others software/music on the computer.
Today is Monday and Catherine and I are up early ... the others are still in bed. And today Jack leaves to go back to Oklahoma and the kids, and work, and gittin' up early, and work....poor guy. Its a good thing he really loves his work! And he really misses the kids. We had a real good visit and I shall really miss him when he leaves. He has his sense of humour back and it was wonderful to see. He brought us a ceramic whistle...a kind of french dude with a beret. He also gave me a SOSU hat and I gave him my 2002 Salt Lake City, Olympic "Roots" hat which reads CANADA on the back.
I saw Gary's updated blog. He is Wal-mart hopping from Nova Scotia to Ithica and I guess now they are staying in a campground in Ithica, NY.
Well, tomorrow is another day.........

Well, Margot and Joel are here now. They came in last night at around 10:30 PM.
Yesterday, Jack and went over to pick up Mother after I took him to see the
Aviation museum. Jack really enjoyed the museum and said that Jamie and Andrew would probably love it too....especially the "hands on" stuff. We stopped off at the pancake house for some lunch and then took mother back to the house. Catherine was subbing Thursday and after she got home Jack treated us all to Joey's fish and chips. After that we watched "Ice-age" because Jack has never seen it.
Joel spent most of today raking leaves and trimming bushes and trees.....I really appreciate that.
Today, Jack and I went out and got a present for Mother for her birthday....a nice set of diamond earrings. We have a reservation at Oceana restaurant for 7:30. After that we will come back home and have Jeannies cake.
Tomorrow is another day.........

Today, Jack comes to town. We look forward to picking him up at the airport. It will be nice to see him again. This AM I went to the Diabetes research group for my appointment at 9:00 AM. Gee I hate to drive in that damn rush hour traffic! Everyone cuts everyone else off, like it is their right to do so. Afterwards, I stopped in to see Nana and bring her an egg McMuffin (her usual). She is in good spirits and is looking forward to seeing Jack. Catherine went to sub for someone this afternoon while I took the Taurus (read Tore-ass!) in to the transmission place for the required 10 day checkup....everything checked out OK. Got the car cleaned inside and out and took Suzie for a walk.
Just read Gary's updated blog. Sounds like he is having some minor problems with his RV. It resulted in them spending the long weekend in Moncton. Sounds romantic. They must have been depressed because they went to a resturant and out for a movie. But, by now they should be on their way to New York to visit Carol's family.

Hello, Monday! Today is sunny and it is supposed to go to 16 or so.
Yesterday, all day was spent shampooing the carpets and still some to do today as still some parts are showing dirt. We have the Rug Doctor rented until tomorrow so I will do some more later. We still did not do the NYT xword puzzle, yet! That is a "have to do" for today! Last night we had to sleep in the guest room as the carpet in our bedroom was still wet and we did not want the dog to be sleeping on it. We spent the evening watching TV in the Rec-room. we haven't done that in a while........I recall some pretty wild parties down there! Right now the rec-room is full of boxes and old furniture. Must get that cleaned out, sometime.
Also yesterday, we went to Home Depot to look at a few things and we met Morgan & Terry there. Morgan is still travelling a lot for his business. He brokers deals for furniture manufacturing in China for customers in North America. He is going to China twice this month and on Wednesday he is flying down to North Carolina for a furniture show. Must be nice to travel like that. He and Terry are both going to China again in November.
Well, Jackson comes in tomorrow and the den downstairs is ready for him. We will meet him at the airport. We are very much looking forward to it.
Tomorrow is another day......

Today is Sunday and the first order of the day is the NYT crossword puzzle.
It is another beautiful sunny day, the wind is calm and the temperature is around 17 deg. c. The front yard is not bad but the backyard is filled with leaves. Poor Suzie doesn't like the leaves too much. I don't think she likes the sound they make when she walks through them.
Last night we went to the Mb. Humanist meeting. The president asked me if I would consider running for the executive and I said that I would. There are some old curmugeons there that remind me of the two old guys in the balcony on the "Muppet Show" (I think their names were Waldorf and Astoria). Anyhow, these two guys seem to be critical of every suggestion, especially when it comes to spending money! You know the type, I am sure that there are guys like this in every group.....so tight, that they sqeeze a nickel so hard that the beaver shits. Anyhow, it may be a challenge. I think the best policy will be to decide how little the group wants to spend and then find nothing in that price range and work your way up......only hard if you are doing it but if you are just Waldorf and Astoria, you can just be critical.
Today, Catherine is cleaning like mad and she made me promise to go over to Safeway and rent a rug cleaner, so better get doing that.
AND....Tomorrow is another day.........

Today is Saturday. It is cool at around 15 deg c. and rainy.
Yesterday, we were busy running errands including renewing Auto-pac (car insurance). It costs $700.00 to insure the Tauras this year, but I should not complain because it probably costs a lot more in other provinces. The Corolla was somewhat less...in fact, they want to pay me to keep it off the road...... kidding.
Well, just four more days 'til Jack gets in and 6 more days until Margot and Joel get in. Margot and Joel have decided that they want to go with us to see the play, "Cookin' at the Cookery" at the Maintoba Theatre Cantre. We have season tickets and this is the first play of the season. It's about a blues singer called Alberta Hunter (do a google search on 'Alberta Hunter and her bio is the first entry), and we are looking forward to it. After the play we will order in some pizza and have the friends over. (Al & Janine and Pat & Paul who will be at the play with us).
Tonight we have a Manitoba Humanist dinner meeting....looking forward to it.

Today is Friday and it is cloudy and around 17 deg.C. I guess the 'heat' wave is over. Yesterday it was 27 deg,c and sunny. Just a beautiful stretch of warm weather for Winnipeg in October.
Leaves all over the place...it seems that one day they were all attached to trees and all was right with the world and then the next day....whoosh all the leaves came down at once. Can't wait for joel to get here and get the leaves cleaned up!!!!! hee-hee
Yesterday, I went over to the Aviation museum to have some cake and coffee in honour of a guy who is leaving. Catherine worked on her writing and then we went for a long walk with the dog to Blockbuster. We rented "Holes" and "Bend it Like Beckham". We watched "Holes" last night. It is a great little Disney movie that the whole family can enjoy. The screenplay was written by the same guy who wrote the book and that kept the wonderful imagination of the book alive in the movie. The movie is seamless in its editing and the acting of Jon Voight as "Mr. Sir" and Sigourney Weaver as "The Warden" is great. Really worth seeing.......Jamie and Andrew would enjoy it, I am sure of that!
Tonight the Bombers play Hamilton on a Televised game.....Woo-hoo. GO BOMBERS
On a sad note, Izzy Asper passed away recently and the funeral was yesterday. Both Prime Ministers were there, Cretien and Martin. Izzy was a tireless supporter of Winnipeg and insisted on running his billion dollar empire from here. He was a tough negotiater....His eyes on a trinket, he once haggled with a street vendor in Bombay and agreed to a VEERY low price and then felt bad and tried to give the guy more money, upsetting the poor vendor even more because he thought that Izzy was reopening negotiations! The guy had a lot of class and will be missed. I hope his dream of building a "Human Rights Museum" in Winnipeg will be kept alive.

Today was another beautiful day, going up to 27 deg c.
Today was a workout day and I met Catherine at the Reh-fit centre after I spent the afternoon at the Aviation Museum. How about that Swarzenegger fella? From a stumbling muscle-bound movie star to a stumbling muscle-bound Governor of California (the referendum capitol of North America). I don't see how he can NOT raise taxes and still deal with a HUGE deficit. I understand that he will take aim at bringing the movie industry back to California from Canada. He calims that movies have been 'stolen' by Canada forgetting the fact that they can be made a lot cheaper here than in California. He even took a pay cut to prevent Terminator III from being filmed in Vancouver.
Catherine has been progressing on her writing and is ready to submit some books to publishers. Keep your fingers crossed.

Just another post for Tuesday. It was such a wonderful day...it went up to 27 deg c. We just got back from Bird's Hill park. We went there and had a picnic (Dal's ribs & chicken!) and we went for a walk on the beach to work it off. The poor hairy pricess is all baffed out now. Just 9 days until M&J come...hope the weather holds!

Tomorrow is another day........

On Sunday we went to the rally in support of same-sex marriages. There was about 300 people there. There was only one aniti-gay marriage guy there so it was quite a good rally. Couldn't ask for better weather, (Catherine and I both got a bit of sunburn). Wish we could have had a banner to show that the Manitoba Humanists support the cause, but our association does not have one, although someone has been tasked with getting one ASAP. It lasted for about an hour but we did not stay for the whole thing as we haf the dog with us and she was getting restless.
Yesterday was a nice sunny day and 26 deg. c. Today it is sunny and going to 27deg.c. You can't have better weather than this!
Monday we went over to the Fort Whyte Nature Centre....we are members. The geese on the lakes were just thick...maybe 20 or 25 thousand. They say that at Oak Hammock Marsh there are approx. 1/2 million geese going through there everyday We walked down a few trails at the FWC and at one point sat and watched the songbirds feeding (mostly Chickadees). They have a herd of Bison out in the field there and an enclosure for prairie dogs, too. If the weather is nice when Joel and Margot come we may go there for an afternoon. After the nature walk we went for our workout.
I see by Gary's blog that he is having a good time touring Nova Scotia, sounds like they are scoring a bunch of free meals, including a turkey dinner at one campground! And now I guess they are off to the good ole US of A. I see that Jack hasn't updated his blog for a while....hey Jack Whaaaaazzzzzzzup?

George Erickson
Last night Catherine and I attended a slide show by the author of "True North", George Erickson. The above link will tell you about the author and there is also a link to his book "True North". It was quite interesting. All about exploring the great Canadian north by bushplane and some of his thoughts on religion. We bought his book and look forward to reading it. Several other members of the Manitoba Humanists were there. The talk was held at the Unitarian Church. Unitarians are a group that believe in some form of higher power but are not dogmatic in their approach...someone last night described them as freethinkers that are a as far as you can get from a religious group and still call yourself a religion. Everyone was so nice and friendly.
Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day and it got to 16 deg c. We were out raking leaves ( well Catherine did the raking!) and got 8 big bags just in the front yard! The leaves haven't fallen in the backyard yet. Today it is supposed to be sunny and go to 17 deg c.
We are planning on attending a rally today in support of same-sex marriages. It is being held in front of the legislature at 1:00 PM.
Well, better get busy on the NYT X-word puzzle ..............I hope Gary is getting them 'cause I keep sending them.
We wouldn't want this would we...?
"CINDERELLA"
Challenged in court by Hawkins County, Tennessee parents and decreed by a U.S. District Court Judge to "indoctrinate students in secular humanist beliefs."

Got our car back! Wooohooo. It only took 4 weeks almost to the day! They had to completely re-build it twice to find out what was wrong. After they rebuit it the first time it wasn't right so they thought it was one of the solenoids...that wasn't it , then they thought that it was a hairline crack in the valve housing...that wasn't it, so they started from scratch and completely rebuilt it and found that it was just a faulty valve. BONEHEADS. Well, it ended to be a great deal for me (not fot them) because they took off about $400,00 for the inconvenience and in the meantime they supplied us with a rental car ( a Mazda Protege) and that cost them $600.00. I told them that it was a lesson learned for them. It still cost us half of what it would have cost at the dealership. Anyhow.......
This AM we went to the lawyers and picked up our new wills and 'Powers of Attourney' for each other. If we both should die then our whole estate goes to Suzie,,,,Bwahahaha ... not really, it all goes to our darling daughter Margot and our Grandchildren, GRANDCHILDREN?!?!.
We also went to Creative Retirement and I enrolled into the computer club and I also enrolled into a course about Web page design....starts Oct. 31. Should be fun. Catherine was saying that she could probably teach a course in writing there. I could teach a course in "How to haggle with a Transmission shop". heehee. Seriously, I am looking forward to it.
Right now I am on the computer and Suzie is....let's see...yup, she's sleeping at my feet.....good doggie. Catherine is out at the library doing research for a book she is writing.
Yesterday, I went to work at the museum and Catherine went shopping...a pretty normal Wednesday.
The weather is getting milder and the leaves are falling off the trees...I sure hope Joel gets here fast so that he can rake them!
