Brilliant As A Star
It's been a busy week. On Wednesday morning I took Mother to get her hair permed and went to the optometrist in the afternoon. Thursday I had lunch with J. Her husband just died a month ago. She is still a little bit in shock. She has two adolescent sons, so the grieving is more complicated for her. That afternoon I subbed in a grade 8 and 9 classroom. Well, you'd really have to call it babysitting. Second last day of school and they were watching "Harry and the Hendersons" while their teachers prepared the gym for the awards ceremony. I still can't believe they pay me for this! Please, everybody, don't tell the superintendent how much fun I'm having or he might start charging me for subbing!
Friday I rented a truck and drove to Gimli with my friend P. We loaded up all the personal stuff, most of which I will be putting in my yard sale this Saturday, and brought it back to the city. There were 2 bikes, a BBQ and assorted other stuff. It filled the half-ton box and the back seat! B. and G. in the next RV spot have agreed to show my RV to anyone who is interested, so I won't have to be running out there every time someone calls. As we were putting up a For Sale sign, a man and woman who just happened to be driving by asked to see it. They had a truck and an older RV and seemed interested. The man said he thought my asking price was fair, but they didn't make me an offer.
All day Saturday was chores, chores, chores. Mow the grass, pull weeds, water the shrubs, vacuum and dust, clean bathrooms and make cookies. I hope everyone had a great Canada Day. On Sunday I had my widows' lunch. Two of the four widow friends came. One couldn't make it and I guess the other one forgot. It went well and I think I'll be planning another one soon.
Today I had lunch with my friend B. Her husband has cancer and has been given "a few months." She is feeling a bit overwhelmed and I think was glad to have an understanding shoulder to cry on.
Then I drove to Gimli for one last clean up of the RV. I put up some For Sale posters around the town. It would be so nice to sell it before I go to BC. I had a bit of a weep while I was there. It seems whenever I go there by myself, I get sad. He loved that RV so much and he loved being in Gimli. I think about him putting out birdseed and peanuts on the bird feeder, cutting the grass, planting flowers and biking over to the library to check his e-mail. I can still smell delicious toasted cinnamon buns for breakfast. I remember walking on the dock and looking at all the boats, pretending we were looking for one to buy. It's so unfair that he only got to enjoy it for a couple of months. But at least he did enjoy it. He was full of life and passion and humour and he filled up my life. I still miss him every day. Remember, you only have one life, so make it good.
Happy Fourth of July to our friends south of the border!
I held a moment in my hand, brilliant as a star, fragile as a flower, a tiny sliver of one hour. I dripped it carelessly, Ah! I didn't know, I held opportunity. ~Hazel Lee
